Kanu Ramdas Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and an ex-NASA scientist passed away on 7th November 2016. He was 86. Kanubhai was among the last few surviving links with Gandhiji's famous Salt Satyagraha. His death means a great loss to the nation.
Kanu Ramdas Gandhi alias Kanubhai will be always remembered as an energetic little boy who led his grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi holding his stick on the beaches of Gujarat's Dandi village during the historic Salt Satyagraha of March-April 1930. Son of Ramdas Gandhi, he was married to Shivalaxmi. A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Kanubhai worked with the US Defense Department and NASA, while Shivalaxmi was a professor and researcher at the Boston Biomedical Research Institute. The elderly childless Gandhi couple after returning to India 2014, for a brief period settled in Guru Vishram Vruddha Ashram, New Delhi. With little monetary resources and virtually nobody to care for them, their plight was highlighted by a news channel after which Union minister Mahesh Sharma got in touch with Kanu and made him speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He suffered cardiac arrest and severe stroke and was in coma since October 22. Though under observation he stopped responding to treatment and soon declared dead. Kanubhai is survived by his wife Shivalaxmi .
